Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer, who helped expand the chain from a regional breakfast spot to a national brand, has died. He was 58.

The company announced Ehmer's death in a statement Thursday, saying he died unexpectedly Wednesday night.

Ehmer had been with Waffle House for more than 40 years, starting as a grill operator in 1978.

He rose through the ranks, becoming CEO in 2003.

Under Ehmer's leadership, Waffle House expanded its menu and opened new locations across the country.

The chain now has more than 2,100 restaurants in 25 states.

Ehmer was known for his dedication to Waffle House and its employees.

He was also a strong supporter of the communities where Waffle House restaurants are located.

Ehmer's death is a major loss for the Waffle House family.

He was a visionary leader who helped make Waffle House one of the most successful restaurant chains in the country.
