The long weekend that includes the last Monday in May, known as Memorial Day, is typically a lucrative time for the movie industry. This year, Disney's latest live-action reimagining of one of their animated classics, "The Little Mermaid," earned the fifth-best Memorial Day opening ever with a four-day haul of $118 million.

Tom Cruise's star-spangled blockbuster "Top Gun: Maverick" took second place with $100 million, followed by "Jurassic World: Dominion" with $89 million. Overall, Memorial Day weekend movie ticket sales are estimated at $1283 million, according to Comscore data.

"The Little Mermaid's" success is a testament to the enduring popularity of Disney's animated classics and the appeal of live-action remakes. The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Javier Bardem as King Triton.

The weekend's other big winner, "Top Gun: Maverick," is a sequel to the 1986 classic and has received rave reviews from critics and audiences alike. The film sees Cruise reprise his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, a veteran Navy pilot who is forced to confront his past and train a new generation of pilots.

"Jurassic World: Dominion" is the third installment in the rebooted "Jurassic Park" franchise and sees the return of Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard as Owen Grady and Claire Dearing. The film also features the return of original "Jurassic Park" stars Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum.
